In response to the growing biodiversity crisis, FACS launched Tree of Life, a program designed to empower congregations to become champions of change and commit to taking actionable steps to protect all living things.
Through unique local partnerships (see Partnerships & Opportunities below), we provide opportunities to build your congregation’s capacity by developing and strengthening Green Teams that can implement impactful, sustainable initiatives. We also have occasional meetings and field trips. In the past, we've identified an extensive list of funding opportunities and informational resources that you can check out at any time.
Potential initiatives include:
- Planting Trees, Community Gardens, Native Species, & Removing Invasive Species
- Composting, Recycling, & Zero/Low-Waste Events
- Sustainable Landscaping & Lawn Care
- Engaging Youth & Young Adult Groups
- Using More Sustainable Products (e.g. Fair Trade Coffee)

Get Your House of Worship a Bird Sanctuary with a Free Site Visit!
The first 20 Fairfax faith communities that request a FREE site visit will receive a mini bird sanctuary. Dedicated volunteers from Plant NoVA Natives and Northern Virginia Bird Alliance's Wildlife Sanctuary Program will help you evaluate your current practices, preserve trees and habitat, eliminate invasive plants, and reduce unnecessary lawn.
Build a Green Team at Your Congregation with IPC’s Faithful Green Leaders Training Program!
FACS is thrilled to partner with Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake (IPC) to empower Virginia faith congregations through their Faithful Green Leaders Training Program. This free, virtual, 3-part training program can help your congregation build or strengthen a Green Team of up to 5-10 members, develop an action plan, and lead the community in taking climate action.
