Many Parishes are celebrating a special liturgy for the World Day of Prayer for Creation on September 1. Here are additional activities planned during the Season of Creation which is celebrated September 1 through October 4.

Sept 15, 2-3pm: Nature Walk at Walker Nature Center, Reston

Sept 22 1 pm Speaker: “Climate Change, Conflict and Migration in light of Catholic Social Teaching” by Walter Grazer.  Mr. Grazer is the former manager of the Environmental Justice Program and Deputy Director for Migration and Refugee Services for USCCB.

Oct 4, 4 pm Blessing of the Animals

Thomas a Becket, Reston VA

Sept 22 at 7 pm Film: “The Human Element” The film, made by a National Geographic photographer, shows how everyday Americans, many who are overlooked, are being affected right now by climate change.

Oct 4 at 7:30 pm: “A Celebration of Creation in Word and Song” will be presented. The program will consist of readings from the Genesis creation narrative with songs reflecting each of the 7 days sung after each reading.

St. John Neumann, Reston, VA

September – October Photo Contest for Middle and High Schoolers

September 29, 8 am – 1 pm: Showcase after all morning Masses: “Food for Personal and Planetary Health”

Oct 4, 9 am: Daily mass for St. Francis of Assisi feast day, followed by short prayer service and nature walk.

Sept. 20, 7 pm – “Paris to Pittsburgh” film screening. Film on climate change and solutions will be followed by facilitated discussion on how participants are responding to the news and issues pertaining to climate change.


Sept. 21 – Gleaning activity with Society of St. Andrew to benefit those needing food.


Sept. 21 – Bulletin back page essay: “To Save the Earth We Must Savor the Earth”  – appreciation for God’s gifts of creation.


Oct 5/6 – Bulletin back page essay: Stories of eco-defenders and Catholic responsibility to protect and preserve the earth.


Oct 5 – Blessing of the animals.
