Back when ships were the main mode of transportation used to cross the sea, there was a specific order for getting into lifeboats in the case of an emergency: women and children first, then male passengers, and then the crew. This protocol implies that there might not be enough room in the boats—or time to get them launched—to save everyone on the ship.

Is that where we are now, with extreme heat, flooding, wildfires, and the resulting smog? Are we there already, with climate refugees and those fleeing wars perishing in the Mediterranean? Will we work to save us all? If so, what would actually doing that look like? Can we always hold a focus on questions of fairness, practicality, and our commitment to work for the survival of all? FACS was formed in the conviction that faith communities value the lives of people “below decks.” All FACS members aim to translate “faith into action” to halt climate change and its consequences—and do this from the source of all love.

This year, FACS is helping congregations across Northern Virginia improve their buildings’ energy efficiency and consciously protect and nurture nature’s presence on their grounds. For over a decade, we have been prodding local governments into forming climate action plans. And, they have! Now, we all need to support them in carrying those out. You can join us in advocacy to further this great work today.

Furthermore, what does your love for this beautiful planet and its beings move you to do? Does your faith community, civic association, or family know of the very useful things you can do right now? Does your congregation have a Green Team or Creation Care group? Would you like help in starting one? If so, contact andreana@faithforclimate.org for tips on how to get started!
