FACS Legislative Initiative on Energy Efficiency
Gains Support of Sen. Jennifer Bulova,
Delegate Kaye Kory and Fairfax County
Energy efficiency is the cheapest, quickest, and cleanest way to meet rising energy needs, confront climate change, and help vulnerable communities. That’s why FACS is leading a new initiative to allow cities and counties to strengthen standards during the 2022 Virginia legislative session.
Our proposed legislation would allow local jurisdictions to set stronger standards for efficient buildings than state baseline standards if they choose to do so. This approach is similar to our successful effort to pass enabling legislation permitting the creation of local green banks.
Virginia Senator Jennifer Boysko has agreed to be chief patron in the senate. Delegate Kaye Kory will be chief patron in the House of Delegates. FACS activists are also meeting with other senators and delegates representing Northern Virginia and asking for their support.
In Fairfax County, over 51% of the carbon pollution that leads to a warming planet is emitted by buildings. Board of Supervisors Chair Jeff McKay knows it; that’s why he supports this proposal for stronger local standards. And why the entire board is expected to soon vote to approve it as part of the county’s legislative package.
