Coalitions

Fairfax Healthy Communities Coalition

FACS is a partner in a coalition of transit, clean water, housing, smart growth, and climate advocacy groups representing local and regional non-profits to speak up on issues for the upcoming county and state elections. The coalition is offering a policy platform that they hope all candidates for Fairfax County Board or Virginia General Assembly offices will adopt.

Fairfax Healthy Communities: Sustainable, Inclusive, Livable calls for an integrated approach to the land use, housing, transportation, conservation, climate and social equity challenges facing the county. FACS urges its supporters to read the platform and join us in speaking up on its behalf. Learn more here.

Plastic Free Fairfax

Plastic Pollution Is Harming Our Planet. Enroll in Plastic Free Fairfax and pledge to avoid single-use plastics!

  • Plastic takes centuries to break down.
  • Worldwide, 5 trillion plastic bags are thrown away annually; 100 billion of these are tossed in the United States.
  • Less than 30% of plastic is recyclable, and only 1 to 3% is actually recycled.
  • Fairfax County incinerates plastic that isn’t recycled, releasing toxic chemicals in the air.
  • Plastics are made from fossil fuels, primarily oil and fracked gas; roughly 12 million barrels of petroleum oil or 69 billion cubic feet of fracked gas are used producing the bags consumed annually in the U.S. alone.
  • By 2050 the amount of plastic in the oceans will outweigh the fish.

How?

Join with others across the region to reduce your plastic footprint and protect our waterways and wildlife.

  • Commit to reducing your use of single-use plastic bottles, bags, and straws.

Litter Free Virginia

FACS partnered with Litter Free Virginia to encourage residents to take part in #LitterFreeVA. This is an excellent opportunity for the faith community to document and clean up single use plastics in the community.

Litter Free VA has focused on legislation to decreas the use of plastic bags. Check out the website to learn how to take action.
