The mission of Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions (FACS) is to sound a spiritual call to address climate disruption caused by carbon pollution. In response to data centers’ growing demands for energy, water, and land resources, and to minimize adverse impacts on the health and well-being of nearby neighbors, FACS has developed the following principles to guide data center advocacy and legislative action.
- Data Centers need to be designed and operated in ways that protect public health and the environment—equitably, transparently and with accountability.
- Given their outsized impact on energy and water resources, data centers must achieve the goals of the Virginia Clean Economy Act and be designed and continually pursue best-in-class operations and land use practices. This includes aggressive decarbonization, optimizing energy efficiency, maximizing clean energy, deploying distributed energy resources and battery storage, and implementing advanced water management technologies, among others
- Government and elected officials must pursue new paradigms of policy making to reshape the regulatory landscape so data center policies include climate change goals and protect energy, water and land from data center operations.
- Data center land use policy priorities need to be strengthened to prevent adverse impacts on neighbors.
By adhering to these principles, FACS advocates for policies that tackle the energy, environmental, public health and equity concerns associated with the inevitable growth in data centers while promoting the development and use of clean and sustainable technological advancements.
