“I immediately knew I wanted to be part of this local movement. Through this 4 week internship, I’ve gained hands-on, real world experience.” —FACS Student Intern, Spring 2025

As a senior at Episcopal High School, my internship with Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions (FACS) has been a great learning experience, deepening my commitment to sustainability and local climate action.
Growing up in Beijing, I witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of air pollution. There were days when the sky was thick with smog, forcing schools to cancel outdoor activities and leaving a metallic taste in the air. The city’s skyline disappeared behind a gray haze. I had to step away from sports like soccer because of this hazardous condition. I found myself asking questions: “Why can’t I just go outside? Why is the air so bad in the city? Is there anything I can do?” Determined to find the answer to my questions, I discovered that much of this pollution came from coal-powered heating systems used all over the city. This fundamental understanding sparked my passion to find solutions and pursue the field of environmental science.
When I was seeking an internship experience in the field, a teacher from my high school recommended FACS, citing the organization’s impactful work, and I immediately knew I wanted to be part of this local movement.
Through this 4 week internship, I’ve gained hands-on, real world experience by:
- Creating communications and social media content to amplify environmental messages.
- Researching C-PACE programs in Loudoun and Fairfax County to serve as a resource for faith communities seeking to save money and resources by making their buildings more energy efficient through FACS’ Power of Faith program.
- Tabling at Eagle Fest at Mason Neck Park, engaging with passionate residents and connecting with other conservation-focused nonprofit organizations.
- Volunteering with Earth Sangha, a native plant nursery, to support ecosystem restoration locally.
- Writing an educational article about invasive species with resources for Northern Virginians.
Now, I’m seeing firsthand how environmental advocacy and actions can drive real change. Looking ahead, I aspire to work in environmental research or consulting, focusing on air and water quality solutions. Through this internship, I’m not just studying environmental science; I’m learning the real world application of this subject and the potential behind it.
